The Association of Canadian Universities for Research in Astronomy is a partner in the TMT project, comprised of
a group of Canadian universities dedicated to the advancement of teaching and research in astronomy and
astrophysics. It has many roles, acting as a liaison between Canadians and international partners in world
observatories and being an advocate for the priorities in the Long Range Plan for Astronomy.
The California Institute of Technology, also known as Caltech, is a partner in the TMT group. Caltech is
involved in cutting-edge research in astronomy and astrophysics and is
also involved with many astronomical
observatories. Caltech is also well known for their managing of JPL for NASA.
The University of California, the third partner in the TMT project, is home to departments of astronomy at
many of their campuses. UC has many world-class observatories and works on many collaborative projects such as
the TMT.
National Partnership in Canada:
The National Research Council Herzberg Institute of Astrophysics provides Canadian research facilities for
observational astronomy. In close collaboration with both Canadian universities and industries, the NRC-HIA develops
innovative and advanced scientific instrumentation for current world class observatories as well as
those
in the Long Range Plan such as the TMT.
A part of NRC-HIA, the Astronomy Technology Research Group (Victoria) is a group of scientists, engineers and
technologists that design and produce high-level instruments for astronomical facilities. Currently the group
is involved in the design of a number of instruments for TMT. More information can be found on the
design pages of this website.
Empire Dynamic Structures Ltd. works in a
variety of fields, such as astronomy, both domestically
(in Canada) and internationally. Empire has been involved in the design, manufacturing and construction processes of telescopes and their enclosures
for the last quarter of a century. Most
notably, they have played a critical role in the design of the TMT's Calotte enclosure.
